The Celebrity Steak-Out is an annual event that takes place in Seattle to raise funds for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Here’s a little history of the Fred Hutchinson Research Center.
The Fred Hutchinson Research Center, better known as Fred Hutch, was created in 1975 by the Hutchinson brothers, Fred and William Hutchinson.
Initially, their vision was to provide an organization that will help raise funds and create space for physicians who are pursuing research. But in 1962, Dr. William Hutchinson developed another dream of building a cancer research center, oblivious of the fact that Cancer was going to be what would end the life of his brother, Fred Hutchinson the base-ball hero.
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center opened its first ever home in 1975 with the help of Washington State’s historic U.S. senator, Warren Magnuson and the Seattle community. It was opened in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood. Soon, it became a permanent abode to a doctor who has spent a lot of time and research building a cure for blood cancer and leukemia, Doctor. E. Donnall Thomas. Dr. Thomas and his colleagues worked and found a way to cure cancer and was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1990.
Now, Fred Hutch houses five different scientific divisions including the initial Cancer Research Center. It boasts of three Nobel laureates, 2,700 staff and faculty members who are working very hard to eliminate HIV, cancer and other diseases related to them.
